Young Carers Support

It’s estimated that there are approximately 700,000 young carers in the UK. Many go unnoticed or do not realise they’re a young carer and therefore don’t receive the support they need.

WHO ARE YOUNG CARERS?

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who regularly provides unpaid care for another family member or friend who is ill, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems. Young carers have a variety of caring responsibilities that would normally be taken on by adults. These can be physical, personal, domestic, emotional, financial or communicative (speaking on behalf of someone else).

We understand that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and succeed at college. We try to identify our young carer students so that we can provide effective support. The type of support provided varies depending on the person and level of support required but a few examples include: deadline extensions, free school meals, time management, care packages and mental health support.

Our young carers champion is Rosie Pate.

Rosie identifies and supports our young carers so that the students can have an enjoyable and successful experience at college. For more information, please email rosie.pate@coopacademies.co.uk or call 0161 231 9200 to speak to Rosie directly.
