Health & Social Care may sound like a course only for social workers and nurses, but it has, in reality, a much wider relevance than that.

COURSE AT A GLANCE

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Five GCSEs Grade 4-9 (including Maths, English Language and English Literature). Extra requirements: Double BTEC - Grade 3/3 in Combined Science. Triple BTEC - Grade 4/4 in Combined Science. 

SPECIFICATION:

Pearson BTEC National Diploma - equivalent to 2 A-levels. BTEC Pearson Extended Diploma - equivalent to 3 A-levels.

LENGTH:

2 Years

This subject can be studied as a double (equivalent to two A Levels) or as a triple (equivalent to three A Levels).

WHAT YOU'LL STUDY

There are two choices for your Health and Social Care qualification at Connell:

TRIPLE HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE (EXTENDED DIPLOMA) - EQUIVALENT TO 3 A-LEVELS:

• The qualification is a mixture of exams and coursework. Exams include a mixture of multiple choice, short and long answered questions and research based tasks. You will also produce a coursework portfolio each year.

• There are 13 units over the two years, of which 4 are examined. Between 6 and 7 units each year.

• Core units: Human lifespan development, Working in health and social care, Anatomy and physiology for health and social care, Enquiries into current research in health and social care, Meeting individual care and support needs, Work experience in health and social care, Promoting public health and Principles of safe practice in health and social care.

There are additional units which will be covered during the two years.

EQUIVALENT TO 2 A-LEVELS, TO BE TAKEN ALONGSIDE ANOTHER SINGLE SUBJECT (A-LEVEL OR SINGLE GENERAL APPLIED, E.G. CRIMINOLOGY OR PSYCHOLOGY):

• The qualification is a mixture of exams and coursework. Exams include a mixture of multiple choice, short and long answered questions and research based tasks. You will also produce a coursework portfolio each year.

•  There are 8 units over the two years, of which 3 are examined.

• Core units: Human lifespan development, Working in health and social care, Enquiries into current research in health and social care, Meeting individual care and support needs, Promoting public health and Principles of safe practice in health and social care.

• Optional units could include: Work experience in health and social care, Sociological perspective, Psychological perspectives, Physiological disorders and their care, Nutritional health or Supporting individuals with additional needs.

BEYOND THE COURSE

You will complete work placements in various settings of your choice within the health and social care sector over the 2 years of study. You will examine how work experience can help you develop personal and professional skills, such as communication and teamwork, and to understand more about the expectations of different professional roles.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is a combination of internally assessed coursework and examination based units.

FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This is an extended Diploma specifically for those who wish to progress to a health-related degree. The course will help prepare you for a range of university courses including Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery, Teacher Training, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Social Policy.
